Karl Nycklemoe is an interdisciplinary historian of the environment, law, science, and technology in North America. He holds a BA in history and political science from Luther College and earned an MA and PhD in history from Stony Brook University. Nycklemoe’s current research project, “Common Highways, Forever Free,” focuses on Indigenous and U.S. law regarding waterways in the Upper Mississippi watershed from the 17th through 19th centuries. He is also interested in how state and local infrastructural projects manifest law on the water and the histories of geology and anthropology. His work has appeared in the Middle West Review and MNopedia, the Minnesota Historical Society’s online encyclopedia.
